PAT TESTING

Electrical fires account for around 40% of all domestic and commercial fires. Around 1000 electrical accidents at work are reported to HSE each year and about 25 people die of their injuries. It is therefore imperative that you are meeting your responsibilities under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require that employers satisfy themselves that electrical apparatus within the workplace is maintained in a safe condition. In effect this means having the entire electrical installation tested and certified at a minimum of five yearly intervals.

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) has become normal practice and electrical industry recommends regular testing of portable electrical apparatus by a qualified, competent person. PAT testing is mandatory but the intervals vary depending on the class and use of the appliance. In addition to Pat testing a regime of regular visual checks is recommended by the HSE.
