Automist

MCFP – Accredited Automist Installer

Automist® is a recognised- award winning, sophisticated water mist, fire protection system, which is considered to be the advanced, aesthetically pleasing, equivalent to traditional fire sprinkler systems.

MCFP work closely with architects, building control personnel, property developers, building contractors and private clients, to provide Fire Safety solutions. Our aim is to enable building regulation compliance within new builds or retro-fitted situations, for residential projects.

Our systems help home owners, interior designers and project managers who are building or modernising homes and need building approval, or just peace of mind for a safe living environment. The system can also be used/adapted to protect vulnerable persons in Fire Risk situations.

Automist® is highly accredited and respected by Fire bodies, local authorities and Insurance companies. It qualifies by meeting the performance criteria in the relevant code of practice for fixed water mist fire protection systems: It is an LABC Registered Solution (EWS534 Registered Detail Documentation for Automist Smartscan Hydra) and has been third party tested by Exova Warrington fire to be acceptable as a code-compliant automatic water fire suppression system, for example in accordance with the recommendations of BS 9991:2015.

The system is one of the only systems that is ever fully tested at the commissioning stage and during routine service visits.

How Does Automist Hydra® Work

Plumis initially developed an under kitchen tap mounted water suppression system, which is still available for a Fire Engineering approach or an enhanced Fire Safety feature. Following this design system, a fixed head wall mounted system, which proved very popular, easier to fit and more versatile was then designed.

Advancements in technology saw the introduction of a Smartscan fixed head system, where a scanning spray head is fixed on the wall, 1220-1400mm up from the floor. Fire will activate this spray head, via a ceiling mounted Heat Detector.

This triggers/activates the water discharge from the spray head onto the fire. The water is delivered by a pump with 10a (230v) mains supply, which is connected to a 3/4” mains water supply.

The fire suppression is achieved, with the delivery of 5.6 litres of water per minute from the electric pump. This is in a vertical water-mist blade form, made up of water droplets less than100 µm in size.

The Smartscan system uses one discharge head per pump. Advancements in technology, testing and validity, led to the launch of the Hydra system where each pump can now activate up to 6 discharge heads. This advancement has allowed us greater flexibility to fit this system into a wider variety of new or existing commercial or residential properties.

When the system is activated by fire, the spray heads will scan their areas in search of the heat source. Each heat detector independently records the room temperature during scan mode, seeking a temperature rise. When multiple heat detectors identify heat increase, the head with direct view of the fire will lock onto the heat source and communicate to the control panel.

The high pressure pump will start up, pumping water through to the active Smartscan nozzle.

The nozzle forces water mist into the fire. Unlike traditional ceiling fixed fire sprinkler systems, the Automist high pressure water mist, from the wall mounted head, means the water mist is injected directly into the fire, where it then evaporates and is converted into steam/vapour.

This starves the fire of oxygen at the base, to suppress the fire and eventually extinguish it. This advanced system avoids water wastage through evaporation, which is the main reason this system works with much less volume of water.

Alternatively, a ceiling fixed fire sprinkler system works from the top down, using water and gravity to cool the flames. Much water is evaporated on the hot ceiling layer and will never reach the base of the fire, meaning large volumes of water are required to extinguish the fire.

Plumis’Automist Smartscan is the only water mist system in the UK to be third party tested and scrutinised by both LABC and BSI and therefore has a Registered Detail and Certificate of Verification, respectively.

Advantages Of Automist Systems® Over Traditional Sprinklers

Traditional sprinklers are expensive to install in retro-fit situations and use large volumes of water (up to 100 l/min). This means they need an unusually high water pressure/volume from the mains supply, or reserve tanks. Automist® runs from the normal water main and uses 5.6 litres of water per minute. In event of activation by sprinkler systems, Automist will use 85% less water than sprinklers.
