The Automist® system, developed by Plumis, is a wall-mounted water sprinkler that uses smart technology to target and extinguish all types of fires. Its innovative SmartScan design allows for rapid and efficient fire suppression using a targeted water mist system.

What Is Automist® SmartScan?

The Automist® system, developed by Plumis, is a wall-mounted water sprinkler that uses smart technology to target and extinguish all types of fires. Its innovative SmartScan design allows for rapid and efficient fire suppression using a targeted water mist system.

Plumis initially developed an under kitchen tap mounted water suppression system, which is still available for a Fire Engineering approach or as an enhanced Fire Safety feature. Following this design system a fixed head wall-mounted system, which proved very popular, easier to fit and more versatile, was then designed.

Advancements in technology saw the introduction of a SmartScan fixed head system, whereby a rotating nozzle is fixed on the wall 1220-1400mm up from the floor. Fire will activate the spray head via a ceiling-mounted heat detector.

The SmartScan system uses one discharge head per pump. Further advancements in technology, testing and validity led to the launch of the Hydra® system where each pump can now activate up to 6 discharge heads. This advancement has allowed us greater ease and flexibility to fit this world-class system into a wider variety of new and existing commercial or residential properties.

Plumis’ Automist® SmartScan is the only water mist system in the UK to be third-party tested by Exova Warrington fire and scrutinised by BSI. The innovative water mist system went through rigorous testing on near, far, shielded and ventilated fires and passed all the vital safety checks required on conventional and water mist fire sprinklers, as set by BS 9252 and BS 8458. Therefore, this system has a Registered Detail and Certificate of Verification.

How Does Automist® SmartScan Work?

A wireless or wired ceiling-mounted heat detector continuously monitors temperature changes in the room. When a heat rise is detected, the detector signals an alarm to all linked sprinklers. When multiple heat detectors identify a heat increase, the fire sprinkler head with a direct view of the fire will lock onto the heat source and communicate this to the control panel.

The rotating sprinkler head scans its environment to locate the source of the fire using an infrared sensor and intelligent algorithm. Once the sprinkler system has located the fire, it directs a high-pressure jet of water mist at the fire. The water jet is very powerful, delivering 5.6 litres of water per minute in a vertical water mist blade made up of droplets less than 100 µm in size. The dense mist starves the fire of oxygen at its base, working to rapidly suppress the fire and eventually extinguish, creating survivable conditions that allow any trapped individuals to formulate escape routes.

With Automist, fire protection is easy, efficient and enhanced.

Automist SmartScan vs. Traditional Ceiling Sprinklers

Traditional sprinklers can be expensive and difficult to install in retrofit situations. They require a large volume of high-pressure water from the mains water supply and/or reserve tanks which can be costly. They may also not be possible to install in some buildings due to building regulations. Automist®, however, runs from the normal domestic water main, making them a much easier and cost-effective fire protection unit.

Due to the well-thought-out placement of the SmartScan nozzle on the wall rather than the ceiling, Automist® sprinklers use a lot less water than conventional fire sprinkler systems. A ceiling-mounted fire sprinkler works from the top down, using water and gravity to cool the flames. However, because heat rises, large quantities of water evaporate in the hot layer of air and smoke near the ceiling and never reach the base of the fire. Consequently, large volumes of water are lost, ultimately requiring excessive volumes of water for successful fire protection. Many traditional systems require 100 litres of water per minute to suppress and extinguish a fire!

In comparison, as the Automist® SmartScan is a water mist sprinkler system that directs a powerful jet of mist directly at the source of the fire, it uses only 5.6 litres of water per minute – 85% less than conventional sprinkler systems. By being wall-mounted, the powerful jet of water mist is able to reach the base of the fire rather than be evaporated near the ceiling, leading to fast and effective fire suppression and extinguishment. Not a droplet of water is wasted.

Automist’s SmartScan feature also reduces water damage to furniture and appliances in the room by targeting the water jet at the fire itself rather than spraying the whole room with water. This means they can be used in open plan rooms and offices without risking the financial and emotional cost of water damage to your belongings.

The Automist Hydra system complies to the mist standard BS8458
A traditional sprinkler system uses 80 litres of water per minute, Automist only uses 5.6 litres of water
We can link your early warning system and the Automist system. Meaning you only need one detector on the ceiling!

Benefits of installing

Benefits Of Installing Automist Smartscan® Or Automist Hydra®

  • Allows designers to explore open-plan potential to create more space and light
  • Meets with Fire Regulations outlined in BS8458 to satisfy Building Control and Clients
  • Low installation costs compared to alternative systems and thereafter low running costs
  • Simple design reduces building costs and mess, especially when retro-fitting
  • Low volumes of water required. Can be simply installed on a standard domestic water main and doesn’t require plumbing upgrade or tank(s)
  • Automist®SmartscanHydra uses 85% less water than traditional domestic sprinkler systems, therefore decreasing water damage and repairs
  • Automist®Smartscan Hydra uses the multi sense detector as the first trigger; this instructs the outlets to scan the room looking for the heat source. This two stage process makes the system less likely to activate unless required to do so
  • Peace of mind for safe living or working environment
